THE historical photograph in the December 8 edition is not rich in clues as to location but the subject is full of information. That he has a wee black bag in his hand indicates that he is a doctor. (Those bags were also popular with rent, gas and water meter collectors.) His heavy boots, or boots and gaiters, mark him as a country doctor and the cut of his jacket and shirt collar tell us he is an Edwardian. The lad holding the reins (his son?) is wearing a cap, clearly of the same period. An even more interesting question than ?location? is, was the photographer impressed by the doctor or his white pony? A few years later his turn out would have been replaced by a little bull-nosed Morris tourer or an Austin Seven. G Kirkpatrick Tavistock
