VOLUNTEERS are being invited to attend an ?Archaeological Conservation Day? on Saturday (December 10) at Kit Hill. Tasks will involve clearing vegetation around the remains of South Kit Hill Mine and helping to preserve the hill?s important archaeology. Participants are asked to meet in the entrance car park at 9.30am and bring strong boots or wellies, old clothes, wet weather gear and a packed lunch. As the highest and most distinctive hill in the vicinity, Kit Hill may have had a religious significance in prehistoric times. At least 18 burial mounds occur on its slopes including one beneath the summit chimney. Mining and quarrying remains reflecting Kit Hill?s industrial past are among some of the finest in England.
