A GARDEN in Lewtrenchard which fell into disrepair during the first world war is being lovingly restored by a group of volunteers.

The woodland garden was established for his wife, Grace, by Sabine Baring-Gould, who was rector, parson, historian, novelist, folk-song collector and hymn writer, including the famous Onwards Christian Soldiers, just before the war started.

Following the loss of many local men to the war, the garden fell into disrepair, only to be rediscovered during this century along with its historic holy well.

A group called The Friends of the Forgotten Garden is re-establishing many of the features of this delightful woodland idyll for the community to enjoy. But such a neglected wooded area requires constant maintenance as well as development.

To this end the friends are holding a working party on Saturday, October 5 from 10am to bash bramble, wallop weeds and improve pathways.

Local volunteers would be welcome to come and help with the task of maintaining and improving the site, whilst discovering this historic place for themselves.

On the following Saturday, October 12, the annual fund-raising jumble and toy sale will be held in the village hall.
