CLASSICAL guitarist Alison Smith will be making a welcome return to Tavistock, as she gives a recital in the parish church next week. The Devon-born musician, who has recently returned to live in the Plymouth area, has been described as one of the most exciting and lyrical guitarists to emerge in recent years. Next week?s recital will include the Adagio and Fugue from Bach?s First Violin Sonata and two waltzes by Chopin that combine both graceful elegance and passion, all transcribed for the guitar. There will also be many original works including the romantic and dynamic music of the Czech composer Mertz, the beautiful work La Catedral by Paraguayan composer Barrios and Sor?s Variations on a Theme of Mozart from The Magic Flute. Spanish music will also feature with works by Tarrega including the famous tremolo piece, Recuerdos de la Alhambra. Alison studied at Trinity College of Music in London, where she gained a distinction in the Postgraduate Performance Certificate. She currently teaches at both the senior and junior departments of the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama in Glasgow. She performs nationwide and engagements have included The Ards International Guitar Festival in Belfast, the West Lothian GuitarFest, the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, and the Norfolk Symphony Orchestra?s 30 year anniversary celebrations. She has broadcast on BBC Radio Devon and given a life performance on the Iain Anderson Show on BBC Scotland. Alison Smith performs at 7.30pm in St Eustachius Church, Tavistock on November 1.
