A MUCH loved Morris Minor has returned to a garage at Lamerton — nearly 30 years after it last popped in for a service. The vehicle is a rare Series 2, one of only six in the country, and was bought by Francis Tamlyn from a Miss Hughes from Down Road, Tavistock. She bought it from Carr's Garage in Plymouth Road, which had a BMC dealership and use to be in Tavistock where the library is now, and kept it in mint condition. Francis, who lives near East Taphouse in South East Cornwall, said: 'Miss Hughes looked after this Morris Minor pick-up like a baby, having Carr's do all its servicing and maintenance. 'She bought it new in 1955, owned it for 33 years and drove it just 57,000 miles. 'She used to go to the markets selling dried flowers and with that light work, it is dent free and in nice original condition.' In 1988 an engineering firm in Bridgwater, (Somerset), bought the Morris Minor and did some restoration work before Mr Tamblyn, a keen admirer of Morris Minors, bought it off them in 1992. Since then, the vehicle has been in storage but Francis, pictured right, is about to give the classic car a new lease of life. He said: 'I started working on it last year to restore it to as near to original as possible. 'I thought it quite remarkable that this rare vehicle is still going today and that the garage it was supplied by is also still going. 'If it wasn't for it being owned by a woman doing light work and looked after so well, it wouldn't be here today. 'Ninety nine per cent of pick ups were owned by farmers and wrecked.' Francis works as a builder and is currently building a house at Lamerton.  He added: 'Everyday I drive past Carr's Garage and soon I'll be driving there in the pick up.' l Picture by James Bird
