FURTHER to Tavistock town mayor Cllr Harry Smith's letter in the Times on March 26, I would like to clarify one point that he made about the town council's budget. Cllr Smith said that 'the borough council reduced the money it passed to Tavistock Town Council'. I'd like to make it clear that West Devon Borough Council simply passed on the reduction in central government funding to Tavistock Town Council through the council tax support grant. The Government has no direct way of passing this money on to town and parish councils so therefore gives the money to the borough council and asks us to send this money on. The borough council was simply passing on the reduction in funding made by Central Government. The reduction to the town council was £7,144.
