THE 350th anniversary of the beginnings of non-conformism is being marked by an interesting exhibition at the Tavistock United Reformed Church.

In the days of James II, it was declared that all churches would use a standard book of prayer, hence the Common Book of Prayer. Unfortunately, for him about a thousand priests in Devon alone, decided not to obey, resulting in non-conformist churches.

The preacher at St Eustachius Church at the time, Thomas Larkham, was one of these preachers, having been offered the post by the Earl of Bedford. His time at the church, along with his previous and latter adventures, make fascinating reading.

He had been a minister in America and a pastor in Cromwell's Army in Ireland before settling in Tavistock and lived an interesting life thereafter.

He is buried within the confines of Tavistock Parish Church.

The exhibition about Thomas Larkham has been open for a few weeks and will close in October. It is only open on Saturdays from 10am to noon.?Coffee and biscuits are available.
