A £16,000 project to shine light on the 15th century church of St Petroc’s in Lydford has been competed.

Thanks to grant funding and money left in legacies the beautiful roof trusses have finally been exposed.

The church has a new energy efficient, user friendly, lighting system installed to replace the 50-year-old, barely adequate previous lights. Visitors are now welcomed by a sensor-controlled system which highlights focal points in the church, particularly the Watchmaker’s epitaph, the rood screen and bench ends for which St Petroc’s is famous. The wagon roof with its bosses and carved wallplates, which was previously shrouded in darkness, can now be seen in all its glory.

Lydford’s Parochial Church Council secured grants from the Devon Historic Churches Trust, the Balsdon Trust, the Viscount Amory Fund and All Churches Trust Ltd to help make this improvement possible. Some £2,500 was also left in legacies over the past few years.

Lydford PCC said the new lighting had completely transformed the church.
