OKEHAMPTON Town Council has contributed £600 towards the town?s Christmas lights this year. Members decided on Monday night to increase their contribution by £100 on previous years because of the excellent job the chamber of trade was doing in providing the display. The chamber recently sent letters to all businesses requesting donations to fund the upkeep of the lights and meet additional costs of new electrical boxes to meet safety regulations ? and the response was very positive. It costs more than £1,000 each year to maintain and improve the lights, which include 120 tree displays on the town centre shops. Any help in carrying trees to their locations and putting them up on the morning of November 27 will be much appreciated by the chamber. All the lights will be in place for a festive extravaganza on Edwardian Evening on Thursday December 8.
