A THIRTEEN-year-old chess whizz kid will be showing off his skills in a simultaneous chess match on Monday for the formal inaugural event of the newly formed Calstock Chess Club.

Theo Slade, from Bude, plays for the England under 16 team and will be playing numerous opponents at the same time at the event, which will be held at Calstock Arts on Monday evening.

A spokesperson for the club said: 'We'd like to make it a public event so that people can come and watch and learn about chess and be encouraged to play themselves, formally or informally. As part of this initiative we also hope to incorporate Calstock Primary School into a junior wing of the club so youngsters get the chance to start early and improve their overall thinking skills as their minds develop.

'Beginners and non players are especially welcome as we hope to have someone on hand to explain the game itself and what's happening in the matches to those who wish to learn.'

Doors will open at 7pm for a 7.30pm start.
