TAVISTOCK College students have been presented with a certificate from ShelterBox, after funding nine extra boxes for the Cornish disaster relief charity.

Members of the college's senate were pleased to receive the certificate following their latest fundraising drive when students donated £3,638.27, bringing the number of ShelterBoxes purchased to 15.

Student vice president Luke Hilton Pierce said: 'The college is very proud of its achievement. The students, and particularly the senate, worked very hard in raising money for such an important relief effort.'

Two of the 15 boxes were co-funded by feeder primary schools which helped raise money following the Haiti disaster.

ShelterBoxes cost £490 and include a 10-man tent and six months' worth of supplies.

Sixth form students are still collecting donations for ShelterBox after cycling the distance from Tavistock to John O'Groats on exercise bikes and hope to purchase several more of the boxes.

Tavistock College students and staff have raised more than £65,000 for charitable causes in the last four years alone.
