OKEHAMPTON Golf Club was a busy place on Saturday - not only was it the Captain?s Day it was also the 93rd annual meeting of the club, which incorporated the official opening of the new professional shop and changing facilities. Ken Marsh, the president for the last three years, handed over to John Spry and Alan Deakin as the vice captain proposed Pete Murphy as his vice captain elect. Paul Rattenbury, the club captain, hosted the day with a fourball betterball Stableford. The team competition was close with Dave Bickle and Steve Cook winning first prize with 46 points to pip Neil Penfold and John Flavin; third were Kevin Harding and Steve Hill on 45. The nearest the pin ladies? prize was won by Cherry James, who was just 70 centimetres away. The men?s nearest the pin was Kevin Harding and nearest the pin in two on the 18th was won by John Leonard. The men?s Dartmoor League Team is doing well this year and they played Dartmouth at home. Though John Weller and Malcolm Hooper lost their hard fought battle 3-1, Keith Harkness and Neil Penfold won 4-3; team captain Pete Murphy and Chris Ball had another 4-3 win; Barry Hodges and Nick Heath had an emphatic 6-5 victory. The final team of the match, Andy Kirby and Jim Morey, had a real battle and Andy sank two long putts of 20ft on the 16th and on the 18th to secure the win. In the ladies? President?s Trophy team against Honiton, Marcia Holwill had a tremendous battle to go down 1-2. Dawn Phillott went four down after six holes, but revived to win her match two up. Penny Deakin won 3-2, Marcia Jones 2-1 and Rachel Spry 4-3. Lyn Hazelton and Cherry James both had convincing wins, though the scores of 7-5 did not truly reflect the competitiveness of the matches. On Wednesday the ladies played the Express and Echo qualifier in a foursomes Stableford format. Dawn Phillott and Lin Atkinson won with 35 points, second were Penny Deakin and Cherry James on 33 and third were Kay King and Kath Mansell on 30.
