Western Counties West
Ivybridge 37
Okehampton 5
IVYBRIDGE were deservedly crowned champions of Western Counties, but they were pushed further than the score suggests.
Okes left with their reputations enhanced and an admiration in the way they took the challenge to the new champions, and should have had more that a sole Griffiths try.
With a prop in the second row, a hooker on the wing and a replacements bench with a combined age of more than 120, the signs were not good.
Coupled with an extraordinary decision by the official to refuse Mason back on the pitch after a blood injury in only the tenth minute, the outcome was a testimony to all concerned.
Ivybridge with two tries, a conversion and a penalty in the first half followed by three tries, two conversions and another penalty, sealed the title.
How Okes made them work. The pack repeatedly slowed the game down and spoiled or pinched the opposition ball. Everybody tackled well and three of the tries came from Okes attacks that broke down in the home 22.
All the players played with spirit, heart and commitment and were eventually outdone by a team packed with pace, power and a great degree of skill. In fact, looking at Ivybridge's new facilities that are soon to be extended, Okes would do well to learn how they have achieved it on and off the field.
This result leaves Okehampton third from the foot of the 10-strong division.
