THE Hatherleigh Tar Barrel committee has issued a challenge to all-comers from across Devon to test themselves against the tar barrel pullers of Hatherleigh on August 6.
Requiring strength, speed, stamina and agility, the Tar Barrel Challenge will see teams of four pull a barrel on a sledge from the Co-op in Bridge Street to the Square, complete an obstacle course themselves and then pull the barrel back again — all against the clock. Competitors can even choose to wear fancy dress if they wish.
As well as pride, cups and money prizes will be at stake. Entries are invited from male, female and children’s teams and all-comers are welcome. Organisations including sports clubs, a darts team, Young Farmers’ Clubs or even just a group of friends are being welcome to have a go.
Trophies will be awarded for the fastest children’s team under 14 years, the fastest male/female teams, the fastest YFC team and best fancy dress team. There is also a cash prize. The square will be full of entertainment, including live music and a barbecue.
The barrel and sled will be on display all week at the Tally Ho! pub and in Hatherleigh square on Saturdays so contestants can see what it looks like and how to pull it. It has a special design with ropes at both ends so it does not have to be turned in the road.

Racing starts at 2pm for children with adults at 4pm. For a guaranteed place, teams can register by Sunday, July 24 for just £2.50 per person. Entries on the day will be £3 per person. Entertainment will be provided, with live music and a barbecue.
