Chagford 4

Hele Rovers 1

AFTER last week's disappointment, Chagford not only played some scintillating football, the home side also kept their heads when under pressure.

Both teams settled into the match early on a greasy pitch, with Hele the stronger going forward but Chagford defending well.

When the hosts did break out, they were all too often caught by Hele's high line and a quick linesman's flag.

Chagford refused to be drawn into a more physical game, eventually breaking the system by using their heads. Botham took a quick free-kick, in response to Andrew Davis's shout and the latter beat the 'keeper to the ball, stabbing the ball home.

Hele had little to offer in response to the home defence, marshalled by Johnston and supported by their midfield.

Chagford's management did well to settle their team during the break and this paid dividends just three minutes after the restart.

Christian Crowther-Smith was the supplier this time as he sent Davis through on the visitors' goal, the latter finishing well. Five minutes later Robin Crowther-Smith out-ran the Hele defence, latched on to Scarry's long punt and scored a third.

Most would have thought 'game over' but Hele enjoyed a sustained period of pressure and were rewarded with Jack Noonan finishing from close in. The manager urged his side forward and Chagford found gaps on the flanks and through one of these Stone set up a 75th minute tap in for Chris Woof. Minutes later, the same player put a decent Jon Scarry cross straight into the 'keeper's grateful grasp.

Chagford Reserves 1

CHAGFORD came into this match with a new strip, fresh faces and a good deal of expectation. Unfortunately, their manner of play did not match the plusses and they found themselves under the cosh from the start.

Watts Blake and Bearne threw themselves forward at every opportunity so it was a surprise they did not open the scoring before the 70th minute. This, and a couple of changes in formation and personnel, awakened Chagford and they enjoyed a little more of the game.

It was Chagford substitute Rob Ballard who marked his debut with a fine late goal, collecting Forsey's clearance, turning his man and firing low into the corner.

Despite further pressure, the visitors could not find an equaliser and ended the day disappointed.
