THE WEST Devon Drive is to be celebrated in song — but no-one knows exactly when.

The Wren Trust plans to hold a weekend event celebrating the past, present and future of the villages on the West Devon Drive, and has been given an Awards for All lottery grant of £3,317.

But the event has been put on hold because of the foot and mouth outbreak.

A spokesman for the trust said: 'A lot of farmers were going to join us, and obviously they are unable to with the present restrictions. We will hold the events just as soon as we can.'

The West Devon Drive was inaugurated two years ago. Devon's West Country Association took over the roadside management of the 12-mile route between Sourton Cross and Liftondown.

Businesses along the route had been hit economically following the opening of the A30 dual carriageway five years earlier.

With funding of some £80,000 the association planed 1,600 kilos of daffodil bulbs as well as shrubs and trees to enhance the beauty of the area. The aim of the scheme was to rekindle the economy.
