LOCAL food was celebrated at a special event hosted recently by WestDEN as part of the Shell Better Britain 2002 project.
A spokesperson for WestDEN said it was one of eight community organisations chosen to represent the region for the series of events and open days.
The aim was to show the contribution community groups are making by working on a variety of initiatives in line with Agenda 21 — the blueprint for 'a better and sustainable world environment' agreed at Rio in 1992.
'A celebration of local food' included presentations from a local farmer and a community-based co-op and an interactive presentation about local food and food miles.
The buffet lunch was provided by Proper Job of Chagford and there was a display of food provided by stallholders at Tavistock farmers' market, which runs in Bedford Square on two Saturdays per month.
World leaders will be meeting again in late summer in Johannesburg at a second earth summit — Rio + 10 — to examine progress during the ten years.
WestDEN is organising a major event at the Methodist Hall in Tavistock on July 5 to celebrate community involvement in Agenda 21 and sustainable development. Contact Pat Mayston on 01822 618068 or e-mail [email protected]">[email protected] if you would like to be involved.
