SILVER students from Callington?s University of the Third Age are celebrating after receiving a windfall from the National Lottery Awards for All scheme.

The seventy-plus members of the East Cornwall U3A received a grant of £4,894 for the purchase of new technology, and to help with administration costs.

They will now be able to enjoy presentations using state-of-the-art computer-based projection equipment and learn how to make the best use of their own digital cameras.

The group also plan to produce local interest programmes which can be shared with other organisations in the area.

Alongside the technical equipment money is also being spent to improve the facilities for elderly and less active members of the group.

These include the purchase of a portable public address system for those with hearing difficulties, walking poles for the less physically able and the purchase of special easels for budding artists with disabilities.

Group co-ordinator Ron Thomas said he was very keen that as many members as possible had access to the new equipment.

He is planning to hold a hands-on demonstration for the leaders of the U3A?s 15 special interest groups to give them chance to assess how best to employ the technology for their needs.

The U3A welcomes prospective members, who must be over 50 and no longer in full-time employment, to their general meetings at Callington Town Hall ? the next one will be held on August 2 starting at 10am when Mike Dobson from the RSPB will give an illustrated talk entitled ?Birds and You?.
