A £100,000 SCHEME to improve safety and enhance the Fairplace area of Okehampton was given the thumbs-up by West Devon's partnership committee on Monday.

The plans include ramps and raised courtesy crossings in St James Street, Mill Road, Castle Road and George Street, with the carriageway at the meeting of these streets raised and resurfaced.

The footway around the gardens will be re-surfaced and a York stone plaque depicting the convergence of Okehampton's rivers will be set into the path in front of Fairplace Church.

Mike Parnell, local services officer for Devon County Council, said there had been an 'enormous amount' of consultation with various groups in Okehampton and the final scheme was a result of this.

The scheme has been supported by the town council and Okehampton enhancement group, while further discussions have been held with the trustees of Fairplace Church.

There was also consultation with traders' representatives regarding traffic management and on-street parking arrangements in St James Street.

The committee agreed the scheme should go ahead, though Cllr Bill Cann had 'serious' concerns about safety in Station Road.

'Might I suggest one side has double yellow lines for road safety? There is no way two lorries can pass safely — it's a very dangerous situation,' he said.

Mr Parnell said preventing parking on one side of the road would also cause problems with traffic.

The Fairplace enhancement scheme will be offered to tender with the aim of starting work in February and being completed by March.
