DARTMOOR National Park has received a £300,000 boost to support innovative projects that preserve the landscape and inject money into the economy. The South West Regional Development Agency (SWRDA) has provided the funding over three years which will enhance the park?s Sustainable Development Fund. DNP receives £200,000 from Defra every year to keep the fund going. So far money has been contributed towards the research and development of a new type of wind turbine that is incorporated into buildings, the potential for hydropower on Dartmoor and sustainable waste schemes for Proper Job co-operative in Chagford. Director of planning and community for the park authority Graham Wall said this latest boost would supplement the Defra grant. ?The Sustainable Development Fund was set up in 2002 and has funded a wide range of activities which add up to a more sustainable local economy benefitting the community and the environment,? he said. SWRDA?s rural development manager Diana Mompoloki said: ?Our national parks are one of South West England?s greatest assets and must be protected. However we also need to consider the changing needs of our rural communities and help to create a thriving local economy. ?This initiative is all about maintaining the delicate balance between man and nature and ensuring that economic development is conducted in harmony with its environment.?
