AGE Concern Okehampton and Torridge has been awarded a grant of £1,400 from the Charities Aid Foundation towards the costs of opening the new centre in Okehampton.

The award has been made in recognition of the use of all reserves in maintaining services during and after the foot and mouth crisis and the sudden loss of funding from Devon County Council in March.

Chief Officer, Barrie Duke, said 'We have been through a tough six months without income and the opening of the new centre was a total act of faith. It is good to know that our work is so highly valued.

'We are looking forward to our local MP, John Burnett officially opening the centre in Crediton Road on Monday, August 12 at 12 pm in the knowledge that we can start to put our highly appreciated service back together again.'

He said many older people in the area continued to express their anger to him over the decreasing lack of support for the elderly in this area.

The new centre will be the focus for day break services, information and advice. A drop-in centre and computer training will be provided.
