DESPITE the drizzle nothing could dampen the enthusiasm of the children crammed into South Zeal?s Victory Hall to give a colourful start to the village carnival. Witches, fairies and pirates mingled with a miscellany of marvellously attired entrants. The local Beavers remembered the second world war years with their tank and army uniforms, including gas masks they made themselves. Regrettably, without a volunteer to provide a float, they were unable to make an appearance in the main procession later. By early evening, illuminated floats lined the village street for judging and inspection by residents and visitors before being led away in procession by carnival queen Abbie Brint and princess Jessica Tizard, to Sticklepath and back. Music provided by the Bideford Pipes and Drum Band was enjoyed while Tavistock Majorettes delighted everyone with their talent in a procession many thought was among the best they had seen.
