PARKING hotspots in East Cornwall are being identified, as Cornwall Council gets set to crack down on illegal parking.

Since the authority took over parking enforcement from the police two years ago, there has been criticism over the increase in illegal parking and lack of visits by civil enforcement officers who replaced traffic wardens.

In Callington there have been constant complaints about drivers parking on zigzag and double yellow lines in Fore Street and nothing being done about it.

Callington town council was this week told that a number of new civil enforcement officers had been taken on by Cornwall Council, which was allowing for more frequent visits to Callington on a seven days a week basis.

There was now sufficient time allowed for CEOs to monitor limited waiting periods and issue penalty notices accordingly to offenders, and this included the pannier market, the council was told. The CEOs would also be patrolling more remote areas relating to surrounding wards and parishes.

Town and parish councils are being asked to put forward information on local hot spots where cars are frequently parked illegally.

Cornwall councillor Andrew Long said there was 'a ridiculous number of people who think that zig zag lines around the Fore Street area can be ignored.'

'The public need to understand that dangerous parking will be clamped down on,' he said.
