Okehampton Argyle 2

Seaton Town 2

OKEHAMPTON retained their second position in the league after this hard fought draw, but the final result was in doubt until the closing seconds.

Argyle had an unusual chance to take the lead in the seventh minute, when Seaton were awarded a free kick on the half-way line. For some reason their goalkeeper Mark Rooke came up to take it, but sliced his kick straight to Nick Drew who from 70 yards sent a snap shot a couple of yards wide of the upright.

After this Seaton enjoyed the lion?s share of play. Jamie Bond missed a golden opportunity when he miscontrolled the ball six yards out, giving Argyle?s keeper Daniel Malcolm a chance to smother it.

On 25 minutes Seaton took a deserved lead when a break down the right and cross into the goalmouth by Robert Hounsell found Shane Scott unmarked to pick his spot easily past the exposed Malcolm.

Argyle put tremendous pressure on Seaton for the final 15 minutes of the first half, but efforts from Steve Williams, Adam Mortimer and Neil Agnew failed to produce an equaliser.

This pressure continued at the start of the second half and the threatened goal came when Agnew lobbed the ball into the area for Mortimer to loop a header over Rooke.

The game looked to be heading for a 1-1 draw, but there was drama to come.

With just three minutes remaining Seaton thought they had won the game when Stephen Griggs scored a breakaway goal.

But with the clock ticking away, a final onslaught saw Robbie Sandercock brought down in the box and Stuart Cann converted the penalty, sending the keeper the wrong way.

With the game entering injury time, the drama continued when to the surprise of both teams and the spectators the referee awarded Argyle an indirect free kick just six yards from the goal-line

Justice was probably done when the Seaton wall did its job by blocking Cann?s kick, but some over zealous protests by angry defenders saw a couple of late bookings, one after the final whistle.

This week Argyle are at home again to Sidmouth Town with a 2.30pm kick-off.
