South Zeal Utd 1

Halwill 1

(aet. Zeal won 8-7 on penalties)

THIS was always going to be a tough fixture for Zeal in the second round of the Geary Cup against a good Senior 4 side, and in the end neither deserved to lose in a close and well fought match.

Zeal kicked with the slope in the first half and created good early chances with Shaun Hiscock and Alan Brimacombe going close.

The game was competitive and the inclusion of Simon Jones in the centre of Zeal's defence ensured that a good strike force were always on the back foot.

The teams turned round at half-time with no goals scored and even when Halwill put the pressure on in the second half Zeal's defence and midfield held out to take the game into extra time.

In the first period of extra time Harley Cann was brought down in the penalty area and Dave Wooldridge scored for Zeal from the spot to give them a one-goal advantage.

Halwill pushed forward in the second period and deserved their equaliser, again from a penalty after a tackle by Cann, which was almost in the same spot as he was fouled, to give Zeal the advantage.

Adam Cann, the Zeal keeper, was the star for the side in the penalty shoot-out scoring one himself then saving the eighth penalty from Halwill to win Zeal the match.

This Saturday away to Axemouth 2.30 kick-off.

Team: Adam Cann, Reg Wonnacott, Tim Saunderson, Henry Bellairs, Roger White, David Wooldridge, Garry Smith, Simon Jones, Harley Cann, Shaun Hiscock, Alan Vile, Leon Ware, Alan Brimacombe.
