I HAVE just re-read your article 'Misgivings over major homes bid' (Times, June 20). It would seem that our councillors have considerable concerns that the promised new road, school and hospital may not be built and all we will get is 750 houses and perhaps a railway.
Although I am in favour of the railway returning to Tavistock I do harbour doubts about its viability unless it is part of a greater scheme to utilise the old track formation — which thankfully is largely intact, to return the railway to Okehampton from where the track still runs to Exeter, thus giving a diversionary route from Plymouth to the rest of the country.
To return to the proposed building, 750 houses will equate to approximately 1,000 cars and 2,000 or more people, which is not good news for parking in the town.
I would suggest that if a new supermarket has to be built that it is out where the new estate will be. Surely it is now time for the town and West Devon councillors to get together with the builders and thrash out exactly what is going to be built and when and then resubmit the plans to the people of Tavistock and its surrounding villages for their approval or dissent?
If the plans are given the go ahead then it is down to those in charge to ensure that everything is contractually secure to avoid any deviations from what has been agreed to be built.
Perhaps some more of our councillors from both Tavistock Town and West Devon would care to enlighten us on what is happening?
