AN appeal for information has been issued to readers of the Times from a South Brent woman, eager to solve a puzzle concerning her family history.

Rosemary Robinson is searching for more information about her great grandfather, John Horn.

He was born in Broadwoodwidger, but from 1845 he lived and worked in Tavistock.

Mrs Robinson said: ?He was a Duke of Bedford man and lived in various Bedford cottages. He was actually buried in the cemetery near Westbridge Cottages.?

Mrs Robinson said her great grandfather married Grace Yeo of Tetcott and they had seven children, four of them surviving to adulthood. One daughter, Emma, married the schoolmaster at Whitchurch.

She said John Horn was a carpenter ? who was also known at the time as the ?finest poacher on Dartmoor?.

She said: ?It has always been said in the family that he was a furniture maker, possibly working for the firm of Dennis.

?A chair which has been passed down in the family is said to be his work and its pair is believed to have been in the parish church, although there is no sign of it now.?

Mrs Robinson said her grandfather always signed his work with his initials, JH, on the underside.

She hopes Times readers may be able to help her in her search for information on her great grandfather ? and she would also like to find further examples of his woodwork.

Anyone who might be able to help Mrs Robinson is asked to call 01364 73159.
