CALLINGTON’S portreeve and mayor has paid tribute to the Queen as she begins her Platinum Jubilee year.

Her Majesty marked 70 years on the throne on February 6, officially starting the celebrations nationwide.

Cllr Mike Tagg said: ‘Personally, for me the Queen has been like the hymn ‘Rock of ages’, only a ‘Rock for ALL ages.’

In 1950, the Royal Family, including the young Princess Elizabeth aged just 23, visited Callington. Nobody knew that in just three years’ time, Princess Elizabeth would be crowned Queen and go on to become Britain’s longest reigning monarch of all time.

There will be special celebrations over a four-day weekend from June 2-5, and preparations are well underway for these in Callington.

The high point will be the lighting of the Jubilee Beacon on Kit Hill as one of 1,500 beacons being lit across the UK and the Commonwealth at exactly the same time. The festivities will also include a cream tea in the Town Hall where the ceremony attended by the Queen in Westminster Abbey will be screened live.
