North Tawton 0

Ilfracombe 31

THIS first round of the Powergen cup saw both clubs struggling for players.

North Tawton started as if the forwards were on fire with great enthusiasm and technique.

But against the run of play the visitors scored with a breakaway try by outside centre Justin Swain.

North Tawton began the restart in much the same style and were giving the heavier Ilfracombe pack a torrid time. Despite the presence of experienced Martin Friggins at scrum half and Joe Fewings at outside half the backs failed to utilise the forwards' possession.

Again much against the run of play Ilfracombe centre Ian Gates ran in another opportunist try.

Despite the second setback North Tawton heads were held high, none more so than new centre Andy Bourmer, who put in some great lines of running.

Play settled in the middle of the pitch when on half-time a kick ahead saw Justin Swain beat the North Tawton defence for another try to leave the score 19-0 to the visitors.

The second half was scrappy with both sides failing to grasp the initiative.

North Tawton lacked any penetrative power in the backs and Ilfracombe's heavier forwards began to take their toll.

Another two tries, both from kicks ahead, saw Justin Swain pick up another two scores to leave his try tally at four.

In recent years North Tawton have lacked the forwards and had the backs — now the reverse is true. If you fancy your chances in the three-quarters come and feed off a hungry North Tawton pack.

This Saturday North Tawton are at home to Marjon, kick off 3pm.
