SOUTH WEST Water's plan to build a cafe and car park at Burrator Reservoir has been quashed by the Planning Inspectorate.
The company had appealed against the refusal by Dartmoor National Park Authority to let the development go ahead.
Colin Thompson, the Environment Department inspector, dismissed the appeal, saying that the development would be unacceptably damaging to Burrator Lodge, a listed building.
This was in spite of Mr Thompson's approval of the general scheme, which he said was in sympathy with the character of the site and surroundings.
'It would allow the natural beauty of this part of the Dartmoor National Park to be maintained and enhanced,' he said.
A number of objections to the plan had been received by the authority on the grounds that it would damage the national park by commercialising the area.
