FOUR members of Okehampton Air Cadets have just returned from a two-week project working in Slovakia.
Cdt Cpl Mark Reynolds, Cdt Cpl Henry Bedford, Cdt Sgt Ben Stephens and the Squadron commanding officer Flt Lt Philip Mingham have helped convert an old school in the city of Kosice into accommodation for older orphans recently released from care, and other people in need of emergency housing.
Members of the squadron removed old plaster from walls, dug foundations, drilled out concrete, built walls and concreted floors.
But it was not 'all work and no play', as the cadets visited a cave 15 miles long, another huge cave made of ice and climbed the High Tatras Mountain. A fun day off was also had at the Water Park at Poprad.
The cadets travelled around by bus, tram and train which were old but very cheap, frequent and on time.
All the cadets said they were as 'keen as mustard' to help other less fortunate people and added that they had all enjoyed the experience and had learned a great deal about another part of the world.
