FIVE cadets from 2312 Tavistock Squadron were among 30 at the Plymouth and Cornwall Wings annual adventure camp to Cumbria last week.
The five took the opportunity to undertake their Gold Duke of Edinburgh's Award expedition in the Howgills situated to the east of the Lake District and the west of the Yorkshire Dales.
For their challenge they explored the geology and water formations of the hills over four days walking eight hours plus a day and camping in three different locations being fully self sufficient.
On completion they were involved in kayaking on Lakes Coniston and Windermere, climbing in Tilberthwaite and ghyll walking in the Lansdale's.
Phil Newcombe, the camp commandant and sector commander for the Dartmoor squadrons of the wing, said: 'This activity is one of many available to our cadets.
'Any young person aged 13 to 17 is encouraged to visit one of my local squadrons at 2312 Squadron in Tavistock and 2443 Squadron in Oakhampton.
'As well as adventure training and DofE activities we teach many skills in aviation led subjects, shooting skills and many sporting activities.
'Some of the present Olympic team were ex-cadets following these activities.'
