A CADET from 2443 Okehampton Squadron has been awarded a flying scholarship from the Royal Air Force's Charitable Trust.

The scholarship will provide Joe Seymour, 19, with ten hours of flying training from Tayside Aviation in a Grob Tutor — a plane used for elementary flying training. The squadron's commanding flight lieutenant Andy Oliver said: 'This is a fantastic achievement for Joe as places on scholarships are extremely competitive.'

Joe, a cadet warrant officer, started his flying career three years ago at 624 Volunteer Gliding Squadron (RMB Chivenor). He achieved his grade one pilot qualification last year, allowing him to fly cadets on their induction flights. Joe hopes that the scholarship will give him valuable experience that will help him develop his flying aptitude and instructional skills.

The Air Cadet Squadron meets each Monday from 6.45pm at the cadet hut situated at the Military Sidings, Tor Road, on the approach road to Okehampton Camp.

The age for joining was reduced to Year 8 youngsters meaning the age limit is now 12 to 20, though joining is only between 12 and 17.
