Westmoor Vets’ Braveheart Award for June
Meet Rags, our Braveheart of the Month.
He came to see us because a small lump had appeared on the top of his head. The vet was concerned given it looked red and angry and had appeared suddenly, so we decided to take an FNA (fine needle aspirate - a type of needle sample) of the lump.
These results came back as a mast cell tumour which can be an aggressive form of cancer so it was decided to go for surgery to have it removed. Given the risk of the tumour spreading into the normal skin around the lump, a large margin was cut around the lump and a skin flap was needed to allow the surgeon to close the wound.
After the surgery poor Rags required a head bandage for a few days to keep pressure on the wound and prevent a seroma (fluid pocket) forming under the wound. Rags was very brave and was quickly able to have his head bandage off and has now made a full recovery.
