TAVISTOCK United Reformed Church is due to close its upper floors for a couple of months while major building works are carried out.
The church in Russell Street expects the closure to happen during June and July, but the downstairs halls will remain open for ?business as usual?, the Rev Roger Cornish said. Services will be held in the halls and mid-week lettings and events will continue.
The church is undergoing renovation work which has so far cost over £25,000 over the past 12 months. Mr Cornish said they had reached a stage in the work which would cause ?so much mess and disruption? they decided to close the worship area of the church temporarily.
The pews will be removed and replaced by ?more comfortable chairs? as soon as funds allow, he said. It is hoped to have disabled access to all parts of the building, building regulations approval being awaited for a ramp to replace the nine steps to the main entrance.
Church members are continuing their fundraising for the project. The next will be a free admission Sankey Evening on May 2 with guest soloist Maggie Holden.
Saltash Town Band will be making a return visit to the church at 7.30pm on May 30. The final concert before the upper halls close will be by the Plymouth Congress Hall Salvation Army Band on Tuesday, June 3.
