STUDENTS from Okehampton College have been learning about the joy of music thanks to the latest initiative by the Turning Tides Project.
Based in mid Devon, Turning Tides is a group of artists, teachers, dancers, musicians, facilitators, enablers and support workers who believe that everyone has the right of equal access to the arts, including those with learning disabilities.
Over the last four months the Turning Tides team have been working with a group of students at the college once a week on a vibrant music-themed project entitled 'The New Learning Vibe', with a wide variety of tasks completed and skills learned.
Vicky Hooper, a co-ordinator for Turning Tides, said: 'We have had great fun together developing many different music skills including playing instruments, creating animation and soundtracks, developing and performing original tracks, learning to street dance and building a junk band to name a few.'
The project came to an end on March 4 and the group held a celebration, inviting teachers, parents and funders to the event where the students had the opportunity to showcase some of the things they had learned and share some of what had been achieved together.
Some of the work completed by the group, including their animation work and some breakdancing skills, are available to view online. Visit http://www.theturningtidesproject.org.uk/okehampton-college.html">www.theturningtidesproject.org.uk/okehampton-college.html to find out more.
