TAVISTOCK'S Bedford Square looks set to be brightened by a children's ride, flagpoles, plant containers and gazebos if recommendations by the town council's properties committee are accepted.
The committee on Tuesday agreed to a small 'ladybird' children's fairground ride being placed on the square for a few weeks in August — Cllr John Wright said it would add to the gaiety and buzz about town.
On a more permanent front, councillors also agreed to town clerk Roger Howard drawing up a plan for 'furniture' for the square with a view to obtaining a grant. The provision of electricity would also be investigated.
The suggestion that gazebos — temporary tent-like structures — of various sizes could be made available for hire was generally approved of and town mayor Norma Woodcock said it would be lovely to have one where the band could sit if it were wet. They would also be useful for other organisations.
'It would be unreasonable to expect a small organisation to buy a gazebo for one day,' she said.
Flagpoles and plant containers would also be a good idea, most councillors agreed, although some had reservations over permanent flagpoles and suggested they were used occasionally rather than permanently.
It was agreed, however, that the poles should be used to advertise events, possibly replacing the banner in front of the town hall, with the possibility of the town's crest or the word 'Tavistock' being displayed at other times.
Cllr Mrs Woodcock said they would 'bring life and vigour to the place'.
