EIGHT swimmers from Kelly Masters group travelled to Saltash Leisure Centre to take part in the first Caradon Masters sprint meet.

Masters swimmers are anyone who can swim, is over 25 years old and would like to compete. Swimmers compete in categories of five-year age bands in the individuals or 120+ or 160+ for team events.

Only Brian Wilson decided to compete in the individual events, everyone else going in for the team relays. Brian was second in his age group for the 50m backstroke, in the men's freestyle he just missed third place but beat his entry time, so he could feel pleased with himself. In the tough individual medley event he came third again improving his entry time.

Then on to the noise and fun of the relays. Kelly entered teams in the 160 years+ event.

The ladies' freestyle team of Nick Cutts, Meg Burnice, Miriam Bond and Wendy Dalton came second in a time of 1.10.90, which was 1.10 seconds faster than their entry time.

The same ladies swam again in the medley relay with Meg going first doing the backstroke then Miriam swam the breaststroke leg, Nick the butterfly and finally Wendy swam the freestyle to finish in first place in a time of 1.21.64 which was just outside their entry time.

The men's team consisted of Colin Tattersall, Jim Burnice, Derek Bidgood and Brian Wilson. They were not as lucky as the ladies were but put up a good fight despite an injury to one swimmer and a last minute team change.

The two teams then merged to form two entries for the mixed freestyle relay 160+ finishing 6th and 8th.

If you would like to join the Kelly College Masters swim team please ring Wendy Dalton on 01822 813155 or come along on Tuesdays at 6pm.
