WARD and Chowen, auctioneers at Tavistock Livestock Centre, report a strong trade for all classes of stock forward at their May Fair sale.
Breeding bulls saw the day?s highest price of £1,620 for a 26 months old pedigree South Devon bred by R J and C J Edwards, Tavistock. The bull, Colcharton Charles 8th, is naturally polled and sired by Treberrick Last Chance and was bought by H Vigers and Sons, Lewdown.
Cows and calves again met strong demand, topping at £880 for a 9-year-old South Devon cow with a 7mo South Devon steer calf at foot from D Bowhay, Mary Tavy. In-calf heifers sold to £525 for a 3-year-old Aberdeen Angus x from I H Barkwill, Milton Abbot.
A total of 450 store cattle met another 100% clearance which saw prices top at £695 for a bunch of five 21/22mo Simmental x steers, first claim, from J H Vanstone, Tavistock. Second claim steers sold to £612 for 1 24mo Charolais x from M J and C M Daw, Whitchurch.
No claim steers (11-19m) topped at £605 for a bunch of four 12mo Aberdeen Angus x from R E Dawe and Son, Milton Abbot, while no claim steers (0-10mo) sold to £505 for 2 7m South Devon x/Simmental x from S Arrowsmith-Brown, Postbridge.
Heifers sold to £508 for a bunch of five 19/22mo Charolais x from A Kilfedder, Tavistock. 16-20mo heifers topped at £458 for four 18/20mo South Devons from S G Palmer and Sons. Peter Tavy, while young heifers (0-15mo) sold to £442 for five 13mo Limousin x from E Distin, Botus Fleming.
Other notable prices include £622 for 4 13mo Blonde x steers, first claim from T D Cunningham, Brentor; £352 for 5 6mo Charolais x heifers from Messrs Skelley, Shaugh Prior; £595 for 2 12/13mo Limousin x/Charolais x steers, no claim, from H E Pellow and Partners, Sourton.
