Devon League B Division Tavistock 2nd XI v Brixham 2nd XI TAVISTOCK took the long road to Brixham in hope more than anticipation with a young inexperienced batting line-up. On reaching the ground it became obvious that winning the toss was vital as there had been a heavy shower to liven up the wicket. Tavistock won the toss and inserted the hosts. This brought instant results with a vicious rising ball from Thomas finding the shoulder of the bat and ballooning up in the air. Next, Johnson was superbly taken by Jefferys? rolling back the years and diving forward at gully. When Kaye drove to Cleave at mid off Brixham were 25 for 3, Thomas collecting all three. Wayne Downham then took over from Thomas and bowled one of his best spells ever, taking 5 for 48, demolishing Brixham and restricting them to 127 all out. The Tavistock fielding was also excellent, the youth of Colts Cleave and Milligan a major plus. With both Tavistock usual openers away John Rich and Mark Webber took over the responsibility. Rich took a blow to the hand - first ball, from first team bowler Upham, and was caught two balls later. Webber hit a top class cover drive, only to be bowled next ball. Tavistock were wobbling at 20 for 2. It was time for a captain?s innings, and McGahey duly delivered with a faultless 73, including 13 fours. Support from Colt Cleave (11) and James Kaminski (25) steered Tavistock to a seven-wicket victory with 24 overs to spare. This put Tavistock back in contention for promotion to the A division.
