Tavistock 6
University A 3
THE machine keeps rolling — Tavistock's men's hockey team took on the University expecting a tough encounter.
Tavistock controlled the majority of play apart from a period towards the end of the first half.
University took an early lead after a deflected short corner left Neil Bradley wrong-footed and found the back of the net.
The imbalance was soon rectified after a swift break by Jefferys flicked the ball past the despairing keeper.
The pressure was constant on the University goal and Jason Lovett scored an excellent centre forward's goal from a powerful cross.
Tavistock seemed to go off the boil at this point and put themselves under pressure by giving the ball away and losing their usual organised structure.
With a few modifications to the team. Tavistock again took control. With superb linking on the left by Costello, Aveyard and Barrett, constant penetration on the right by Honey and Bellard and Roberts-Wray introducing a more physical element to the game, the score-line was duly increased by another fine goal by man of the match Jefferys who had troubled the visiting defence all afternoon.
Jefferys scored his fourth soon after and the game was all but won, but University did not lie down and broke again to score their third and close the deficit a little.
As ever the composed performance by Tavistock's back three contained the University scoreline and the game was eventually put out of reach by a well placed strike by Edwards following a good move down the right.
This week Tavistock are away to Marjons A 2.30pm.
Tavistock 2nd XI 1
PGSOB D XI 0
TAVISTOCK seconds hockey team travelled to Plymouth for a game in which the first half was played in appalling weather.
A draw would have been a fair result as both sets of forwards missed chances to score. PGSOB hit the post several times and Tavistock looked dangerous until it came to putting the final shot in.
Cheffey, up front during the first half, played well collecting through-balls from the defence, but was unable to score. Osborne in goal made several good saves and Thornton was in sprightly form moving up to support the midfield.
After half-time, Tavistock found it hard to get the ball away from their own half, but never seemed to be in serious trouble although Thornton did have to save a shot on the line.
Tavistock began to get more on top and Newman Jnr was unlucky not to score. The same could, however, be said about most of the forwards.
The winning goal came when Young stopped a short corner and laid it all to Cheffey who scored.
This was not the finest performance put in by the team, but they continue the season with only one defeat so far.
