MORE that £1,800 has been raised by two sprightly 70-year-old women from the Okehampton area who completed a walking marathon in aid of breast cancer charities.

Armed in decorated bras, friends Libby Watson and Jenny Norman pounded 26-miles of pavement to complete the London Moonwalk — a midnight walking marathon through the streets of the capital.

Libby, from Sticklepath, and Jenny, from Okehampton, said they were pleased to have completed the challenge.

‘We made it!’ said Libby. ‘A total of 26.2 miles blister-free and with no problems! Thanks to the lovely volunteers, who kept us supplied with water and encouragement, and a big thanks to Evelyn Dean (a friend from London) who was walking with us.

‘Despite the weather being a bit breezy and drizzly the atmosphere was still magic, especially as some of the famous landmarks we passed were bathed in pink light for the occasion.  

‘The reaction of the people we passed was fantastic.  Drivers of cars, taxis and buses sounded their horns, shouted and waved, which was a real boost!  ‘Unfortunately, there were not so many bras on show due to the chilly conditions but we proudly stepped out in the spirit of the walk.’

‘We are delighted to have raised over £1,800 and are still counting donations — we would like to send our grateful thanks to all who have sponsored us!’

Organised by Walk the Walk — the largest grant making breast cancer charity in the UK — the Moonwalk event draws in thousands of men and women each year, armed in flamboyant bras and costumes. Everybody taking part in the challenges is raising money that will be granted to various breast cancer charities and charitable organisations which help people suffering with breast cancer and their families.

Libby added: ‘We are still receiving sponsorship which will go towards funding research projects and support for those living with breast cancer now.  So, if you would like to contribute please go to our Just Giving website.’
