A NEW set of 12 letterboxes has been hidden on the moor to raise money for Belstone Village Hall.
Designed by members of Belstone Art Group on the theme of 'Old Belstone', the stamps depict local features which, for one reason or another, have disappeared.
Organiser Chris Walpole said: 'Not many people know that the biggest waterwheel ever built on mainland Britain was right here at Belstone.
'It was 60 feet in diameter and was used in the last decades of the 19th century to get water out of the local copper mine.
'It was broken up for scrap a hundred years ago so was an obvious choice to turn into a letterbox stamp with this theme.
'We've also got a stamp showing a quirky fence made out of wooden 'dummy men' who had been used as targets by the military.
'Letterboxing is a great way to explore the moor.
'This particular three mile walk takes you along the beautiful East Okement River to Cullever Steps, then back to the village past the historic Irishman's Wall and over Belstone Tor itself, with wonderful views in all directions.'
The boxes are on the moor until the end of September.
To obtain a set of clues, send a stamped self-addressed envelope and a cheque for £2.50, made payable to Belstone Village Hall, to Chris Walpole, Little Gables, Belstone, Okehampton, EX20 1RD.
The clues can also be purchased at The Tors pub, the Thursday morning café in the hall and from Okehampton Tourist Information Centre.
