TAVISTOCK Sir Francis Drake Bowling Club began their week with a bank holiday ?Bowls Drive?, involving eight mixed teams of club members, which was won 23-13 by skip George Blackburn and team of Diana Smirles and Vic Stacey. The first match was an away fixture against neighbours Okehampton. Tavistock lost the match 69-117 after the Okehampton side won four of the five rinks played. Tavistock?s winning rink was that of skip Norman Paramor and team of Brian Preece, Vic Stacey and Anne Browne, who won 18-11, with 10 of their winning score coming from single shot wins. Skip Clive Jago and his crew of Ernie Piper, Harvey Leach and Val Powell-Thomas lost 16-24. Skip Der Saunders and team of Gordon Northey, Albert Townsend and Bob Powell-Thomas went down 15-31, with the opposition scoring five shots twice during the game. Skip John Smith and his squad of Brian Davis, Mike Felles and Diana Smirles lost 11-21, and skip Roy Northam?s team of Bill Ashe, Frank Welch and Joan Northey failed to get off the mark until the eleventh end, finally losing their game 9-28. The ladies team were at home to Bere Alston in a league match which ended in a 34-29 victory for the Tavistock ladies, thanks to a good 20-11 win from skip Marion Allen and team of Joan Northey, Hazel Lovell and Marlene Paramor. Skip Yvonne Meneer and crew of Anne Browne, Jill Lacayo and Sue Silcox lost 14-18. The friendly rink played alongside the league games ended in a 24-10 win for the Bere Alston team who picked up 13 shots in the last five ends to secure their win. Saturday involved a coach-load of Tavistock players and supporters travelling to Paignton for a mixed match against Paignton Torbay. The match ended in a 118-108 win for the Tavistock teams who won four of the six rinks played. Skip Ernie Piper led his team of Catriona Meek, Vic Stacey and Frank Welch to an 18-11 victory and skip Norman Paramor and his team of Shirley Blackburn, Albert Townsend and Mike Silcox won 22-17. George Blackburn led his squad of Sue Silcox, Tom Percival and Bob Powell-Thomas to a close 21-20 win, while skip Roy Northam achieved a runaway 25-13 victory with the aid of Brian Preece, Roy Gill and Joan Northey. Skip Bill Ashe and his crew of Barry Chappell, Marlene Paramor and Clifford Hicks lost 17-15 and skip Stuart Doidge and team of Val Powell-Thomas, Walter Meek and Mike Felles went down 17-30. Members can now look forward to watching Sunday?s open tournament on the club green. The competition involves some 16 teams from across Devon, competing for over £200 in prize money.
