DEVON Youth Games ? the county?s biggest junior sporting event of the year ? is coming to West Devon next June. West Devon Borough Council is delighted to be hosting the day-long annual festival of sport which will bring together more than 1,000 young people from local authority areas in the county. The games take place on Saturday June 30 in Okehampton. Sports for the eight to 16 year-olds are expected to include aquathlon (swimming/running), athletics, badminton, cricket, volleyball, hockey, tag rugby, tennis, netball, Street Sports, squash and gymnastics. West Devon mayor Ken Williams said it was the first time the borough had hosted the games and the council would make it a day to remember. He said: ?Okehampton in an ideal setting for the games and we?re looking forward to welcoming the young sportsmen and women from across the county.? The games will take place in Simmons Park using facilities at Okehampton College, Parklands Leisure Centre, Okehampton Tennis Courts and the Astroturf pitch. Tammy Messenger, West Devon?s sports development officer, said that the venues and facilities are all within a short distance of each other in Okehampton?s Simmons Park, which helped with the logistics of the event. ?We are absolutely thrilled that our team is on home territory this year and we hope we can continue on our success of previous years.?
