NEW information panels that have been installed near to the bus stop just by the shops in Yelverton are set to give visitors and residents alike a taste of what's on offer in the area.
The first of the two Drake's Trail panels includes a large map giving basic information about local attractions, and the four Drake's Trail walking and two cycling routes in the countryside surrounding Yelverton. These scenic routes take in stops such as Burrator Reservoir, Lopwell, and Buckland Abbey.
A second panel contains information about the rich history of the area, including links to Sir Francis Drake who was born near Tavistock before residing at Buckland Abbey, and who oversaw the construction of a freshwater leat from the River Meavy to Plymouth.
Christopher Kirwin, chairman of the Tavistock and Villages Development Forum which funded the panels, said: 'These new boards will raise awareness of the Drake's Trail, and the cycling and walking opportunities in the area.'
Further work extending the main off-road cycle route to link it to Tavistock is progressing well.
The local Devon County and West Devon Borough councillor Philip Sanders said: 'People can now ride all the way from Horrabridge to Plymouth on off-road routes. The Drake's Trail is often busy with cyclists and walkers in the Yelverton area, and these information boards will help get the message about the extended network of routes to local people and visitors.'
West Devon Borough ward member Cllr Margaret Garton, added: 'The Drake's Trail and fantastic local scenery can be enjoyed on a bike or on foot. As more of the off-road route is completed, it is important that this is widely promoted through a variety of means.'
In addition to the information boards, Podcasts giving more information about the area can be downloaded onto MP3s while on the routes themselves. Visit http://www.drakestrail.co.uk">www.drakestrail.co.uk for more information.
