THE final heat of Okehampton's Battle of the Bands 2009 kicked off with a fantastic display of talent last week, as two more bands went forward to the grand final this weekend.
Once again the scores were incredibly close as the judges chose the last two coveted final places.
Coming in first was The Sam Dowden Band, who warmed the crowd with their organic sound and Sam's acoustic guitar, backed by piano, bass and drums.
In second place was a last minute entry from Exeter, Sunshine Getaway, who exploded onto the stage with high-energy and original material.
Taking the reserve spot in third place was the final act of the night, The Massacre, from Crediton.
Richard Appleby, competition organiser, said: 'The band pummelled the crowd with a blistering set of high octane rock, with fast tempos, technical arrangements, flash guitar and a lot of black leather.
'Competition was tight, with talented bands thrashing out their best performances to try and win a place in the grand final.'
The first band on were Okehampton-based Feedback, who served up a starter of classic hard rock, with fine clean sound and gritty Bon Scott vocals.
Three-piece band The Roulettes, also from Okehampton, performed with dynamic tension, with two front men swapping and cutting up the vocal lines between them.
The Aftermath, who were formed as part of Holsworthy Youth Club Project, performed with bouncing energy — a band to watch out for next year.
Next onstage were North Devon band, The Unnamed Heroes, who performed with a strong opening number, complete with Hendrix style behind the head guitar solo, good vocals and all round good presentation.
Richard said: 'The two finalists of heat three will join the other six finalists from heat one and two, to perform at the grand final.
'They will compete for major prizes, including recording studio time, various instruments and the chance to play at the Bristol Colston Hall, as support to a top touring band.'
Richard said the final was planned as a giant family party for the whole of Okehampton and the surrounding area.
'Everybody is invited to bring picnics, blankets or gazebos.
'There is no bar on site but everyone is welcome to bring their own drinks,' said Richard.
Admission is free, but donations would be greatly appreciated to help pay for expenses.
There will be hot and cold food available and a range of sideshow attractions, including a giant bouncy castle and the famous rodeo bull, for all to enjoy.
The evening will be rounded off by a full set from top Status Quo tribute band, Staid as Quo.
There is still time for anyone who would like to run a trade or charity stall.
The grand final will be held this Saturday, August 8, in Simmons Park from 6pm.
