WHAT was presumably a casually discarded cigarette caused smoke to billow from a litter bin in Brook Street, Tavistock, last Thursday afternoon.

The potential blaze was swiftly extinguished by staff from the Times and Karen's Restaurant, assisted by a passing West Devon councillor, Mike Benson.
