FOR International Women's Day in March, volunteers and customers of Oxfam in Tavistock gathered in the shop to make a rug from recycled and donated material to raise money for the appeal — now after months of volunteers adding to it, the finished product is to be auctioned off. Over the last few months, volunteers have been adding to the rug, called a 'proddy rug' which was made from prodding re-used material through hessian. All money from the sale of the rug is going toward the International Woman's Day cause — a day to show respect, equality and political justice for women worldwide. Over the next two weeks, the rug will be on display in the shop in West Street to be sold through a silent auction where anyone can put their offer in a jar and the winning bidder will be able to take it home with them. Shop manager Jacky Theobald said: 'As always the volunteers and the public work hard to produce something that each year can be sold to celebrate International Women's Day. 'During these years the money raised has been proven to support women in various circumstances, improve equality, help create well-being and a better life for them and their family.' To volunteer with Oxfam and be involved in future events, contact Jacky or Jake on 01822 615534 or visit the shop.
