OKEHAMPTON Ladies' A Tennis team have had mixed fortunes in their recent matches.
Playing away against Tunnels, Beth Carter and Jackie Jarvis made a good start and took an early lead against the second pair. Playing some of their best tennis this season they won the match 6-3, 6-4.
Following an evenly matched encounter with long rallies against the first pair, Tunnels took the first set 2-6. The second set went to a tie break which Tunnels eventually won.
Julia Moysey and Angela Herrod-Taylor took a while to settle against Tunnels first pair and soon found themselves one set down. At 3-3 in the second set, the pair suddenly found form and came back to take the set 6-4. They continued their form to win the championship tiebreak and the match.
Against the second pair they won 6-1,6-2 giving Okehampton a 6-3 win overall.
The following week Okehampton entertained Sidford A who had come down from division one of the Exeter and District Tennis League.
Both Okehampton pairs had enjoyable matches against the Sidford first couple with the 2-6, 2-6 and 3-6,2-6 scores not really reflecting the closeness of the games.
Against the second couple Beth Carter and Jackie Jarvis had another close encounter but couldn't quite hold onto their lead in the second set, losing eventually 2-6,4-6. Julia Moysey and Angela Herrod-Taylor started well against the second pair taking the first set 6-2.
Roles were reversed in the second set with Sidford winning 6-1.
It was all set up for a tense championship tie-break and at 5-5 it could have gone either way. Following a nervous few points Okehampton won 10-6 gaining two valuable league points.
• Next match at home on Monday, June 15 against Exeter Golf and Country Club.
